Additional information about the painting :
Our painting is the original preparatory painting for the large size one hanging in the collections of the Musée des Beaux Arts de Nice.
The painting was donated to the museum by his sister shortly after the artist’s death.
Inspired by Anatole France’s novel Thaïs, the painting shows the ascetic Athanaël preparing to convert Thaïs, an Alexandrian courtesan.
The characters and setting are taken from an imaginary Orient, with its many exotic beauties.
Nothing has been overlooked: neither ” Thaïs “curvaceous forms, nor the incredible mix of genres in a setting that is intended to be local in color.
To achieve this, the painter has borrowed elements from the art of the Pharaohs, the Maghreb and Greece.
